Ineos Automotive

Ineos Automotive had an interesting start. The Ineos Group Limited is a British chemicals company that is currently listed as one of the four biggest in the world. It was founded by Sir Jim Ratcliffe in 1998, a car enthusiast with a fondness for adventuring off the beaten path. He would go on to establish Ineos as a car manufacturer less than two decades later. Recognizing a need for a stripped-down off-roader, Ratcliffe was inspired by icons like the Land Rover Defender, and thus Projekt Grenadier was born.

In 2019, the company introduced the world to the first prototype of the Ineos Grenadier. A no-frills SUV powered by a BMW-sourced engine, the Grenadier resembles old-school overlanders and is mechanically equipped to tackle the roughest terrain. A second model has also been introduced - a pickup truck based on the Grenadier SUV. The company may be fresh on the scene, but Ineos vehicles are ready to take on stalwarts in the off-road segment.

What to Consider When Buying From Ineos Automotive

As a relatively new brand in the automotive sector, Ineos has a few challenges ahead. The USA is pickup truck and SUV country, and buyers of such cars are known for being extreme loyalists with a love for home-grown vehicles.

However, with electric cars currently all the rage - with mixed reception from consumers - the time may be right for a new brand to be introduced: a brand that prioritizes capability and versatility, and claims to have created an uncompromising 4x4 from the ground up. Here are some advantages and disadvantages to shopping for an Ineos vehicle:

Pros

  • Incredible 4x4 capability
  • New-kid-on-the-block status
  • Old-school looks are charming and instantly recognizable
  • Various configurations available
  • Trim levels allow for a choice between some luxury and off-road prowess
  • Fresh interior layout sets it apart from stereotypical off-roaders

Cons

  • Unknown reliability expectations
  • No brand cachet (yet)
  • High starting cost
  • Limited models with one powertrain in the USA

FAQs

What engine does the Ineos Grenadier have?

The Grenadier is powered by the familiar 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine found in many BMW’s and the Toyota GR Supra. The B58 engine has been tuned to make 282 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque for the Grenadier and its Quartermaster variant. In the UK, a diesel mill is available, but this won’t be brought stateside.

What’s the difference between the Grenadier and the Grenadier Quartermaster?

The Quartermaster is Ineos’s second model. Based on the Grenadier SUV, the Quartermaster is the pickup truck version sporting the same retro looks. The truck gets a relatively small 5.1-foot box at launch, but whether alternative cargo box sizes will be available remains to be seen.

What’s the best Ineos vehicle for off-roading?

Both the Grenadier and the Quartermaster have been designed as off-roading champions with all the standard mechanical features allowing you to go on adventures off the factor floor. But for those who take their outdoor excursions seriously, Trialmaster trims come with a raised air intake, an access ladder, BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, and front and rear locking differentials.

What do Ineos cars cost in the United States?

Currently, only two cars are planned for sale in the USA, including the Ineos Grenadier SUV and the Grenadier Quartermaster, which will arrive later on. Both models are available in a base trim, as the off-road ready Trialmaster, or the slightly more luxurious Fieldmaster models.
