Porsche's Tractor Race At Laguna Seca Was The Slowest One-Make Race Ever

Offbeat / 1 Comment

Not the usual pace from your typical Porsche race, but just as fun.

Porsche's 2023 Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca this past weekend was host to one of the strangest, and perhaps slowest Porsche races of all time - the Porsche tractor race.

As a part of Porsche's 75th anniversary celebrations, Rennsport Reunion celebrated all things Porsche. While many might have been most excited about the launch of the million-dollar Porsche 911 GT3 R Rennsport or the striking Mission X concept making its American debut, the event had something for everyone, from classics to modern cars and motorsport to roadgoing spectacles.

Of course, race cars and many Porsche 911 sports cars took center stage at the event, but probably the most crowd-drawing part was an all-star race between classic Porsche tractors.

Piloting these vintage farming vehicles are notable drivers from the brand's lineup of factory drivers. This includes Flying Lizard members Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long. Also participating were former F1 driver and IMSA champion Felipe Nasr, and GT racer Nick Tandy.

To make the tractor race all the more fun, the organizers began the race with a Le Mans-type start; the drivers had to run to their tractors from across the track and start them up before trying to go as fast as possible around the circuit.

These are far from equal-spec machines, with some sporting wild aero and famous liveries, including one inspired by the iconic Pink Pig 917. Another was hilariously pulling a loaded trailer.

The Porsche tractor race at Rennsport Reunion 7 was a follow-up to the one held back in 2018. Porsche claimed it had to bring back the off-beat race due to popular demand.

Besides the tractor race, the 2023 Rennsport Reunion saw more than 300 historic Porsches gathered in one place, making it the largest Porsche gathering of its kind. The more than 300 cars included the likes of the monstrously-powered Porsche 917/30 from the 1973 CanAm season, the Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid, and the radical-looking 909 Bergspyder, among others.

All of those cars took on Laguna Seca at a race pace, a delight to longtime fans of the brand who were in attendance.
