Lucid's Massive Screen Wall Useful For Perfecting EV Designs

The technology can also save the EV maker time and money.

Automakers have devised interesting ways to design their models; Nissan uses AI to design cars, while Mazda still adopts a hundred-year-old technique to get the job done. But over at Lucid, the California-based EV maker is designing the Air and its future EV models using "The Wall."

In partnership with Samsung, The Wall has been installed at Lucid's design studio to provide designers and engineers a collaborative space for developing its cars. It is made possible using microLED technology spanning 225 inches in length. It also displays a true-to-life color 1:1 scale model that allows designers to review their work as a collective.

With an increased collaboration between the engineering and design teams, the design process is accelerated, saving the company time and money.

One of the areas designers should look at on the giant screen is aerodynamics. After all, the streamlined body of the Lucid Air is its strong point, boasting a drag coefficient of 0.197 Cd. In the real world, the more aerodynamic a car is, the better the range will be.

As mentioned earlier, future models will also benefit from The Wall. Future EVs like the Lucid Gravity could've been designed with the giant screen at the automaker's headquarters. This all-electric SUV will be coming out in November.

"At Lucid, we're on a mission to inspire the adoption of sustainable energy with a focus on the human experience. With The Wall, we're able to take this mission to heights," said Jenny Ha, exterior design manager at Lucid Motors.

"Supporting Lucid in its mission to deliver sustainable luxury vehicles - and the stunning design of the new Lucid Sapphire made possible with our 225-inch class high-resolution display - has been both inspiring and rewarding," said James Fishler, senior vice president of the home entertainment and display divisions at Samsung Electronics America.

While Samsung continues to innovate the automotive industry through technologies like The Wall, tech giant rival Apple's planned EV project will reportedly not see production lines soon. A prominent Apple analyst said the Apple Car might not go into mass production "within the next years."
