Here's What To Expect From IAA Mobility Munich Motor Show 2023

Technology / Comments

Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, and Audi are among the brands that will showcase new cars and technology.

The 2023 IAA Mobility Show, also known as the Munich Motor Show, will open its doors to the public on September 5, 2023. Several automakers are preparing to display new vehicles and concepts alongside futuristic technology.

IAA is a biennial event, but despite that, it is one of the most important fixtures on the automotive calendar. The last event, held in 2021, was a great success and attracted more than 407,000 visitors from 95 countries. Nearly 9,000 test drivers were conducted, showing that the Munich Auto Show is still the place to be if you're a car manufacturer with something to offer.

Here's what we can expect from the confirmed vendors taking part from next week.

Audi

While Audi has confirmed it will attend the Munich Motor Show, the Ingolstadt-based brand has not said what it will show off.

IAA Munich strongly emphasizes electromobility and technology, so we don't expect to see any of the brand's sportier models in attendance. The latest Audi electric vehicle on the horizon is the Q6 e-tron, so we should see that at the show.

The Q6 e-tron has a sophisticated lighting system that can warn other motorists of obstructions in the roadway, using the taillights to display symbols that will alert following cars of a collision or traffic jam up ahead. We expect the new Q8 e-tron and e-tron GT models to be in attendance, along with the facelifted Q8.

BMW

BMW will make quite a splash at the Munich Motor Show. The all-new 5 Series plug-in hybrid will appear alongside the brand's latest electric vehicles, such as the iX1, i4 Gran Coupe, and the iX SUV.

More importantly, the Bavarian brand will treat showgoers to a fresh look at the Neue Klasse models. A new 'Vision Neue Klasse' concept will preview the new direction BMW is taking, specifically with the 3 Series. And this isn't just some outlandish design study made to turn heads. CEO Oliver Zipse said the newcomer is "close to standard production and will be on the roads soon."

Aside from that, we look forward to seeing the armored BMW i7 and X5 VR6 Protection models.

BYD

Chinese automaker BYD (Build Your Dreams) will use the IAA Mobility Show to introduce the Denza luxury sub-brand to the European market.

The Denza D9 will make its first public appearance at the event. The seven-seater minivan is described as the "ultimate people carrier" and is offered with fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrains. BYD and Mercedes-Benz back Denza through a joint venture.

BYD's Seal U crossover will also make its European debut. Two trim levels will be offered. The Comfort derivative has a 261-mile range thanks to its 71.8-kilowatt-hour Blade Battery. There's also a Design variant with an 87 kWh Blade Battery and an estimated range of 311 miles. Both figures have been calculated on the WLTP cycle.

The Seal U will be joined by the Seal sedan, a Tesla Model 3 rival unveiled last year.

Mercedes-Benz

The Three-pointed Star will unveil a new electric concept car that will preview the third-generation CLA-Class. Underpinned by the company's new MMA architecture, the platform has been designed with electric power in mind but can still accommodate a combustion engine.

Reports suggest the electric Benz will boast 800-volt architecture that allows for fast charging at speeds of up to 350 kW. With a generous battery pack sized around the 100 kWh point, we can expect a driving range of around 530 miles (on the WLTP cycle).

Second-generation permanent magnet synchronous motors (eATS2.0) will provide the electric version with power, which will be sent to the driven wheels via a two-speed transmission. A four-cylinder will be found under the hood of the ICE variant.

Aside from the concept sedan, Mercedes will also showcase the facelifted EQA, EQB, and EQV electric vehicles.

MG

The stunning Cyberster will make its European debut at the IAA Mobility show. It's the ideal time for MG to introduce the electric roadster to the European market, especially as the brand celebrates its 100th anniversary.

We recently learned that the Cyberster is quite the performer - on paper, at least. The dual-motor derivative produces 536 horsepower and 535 lb-ft of torque, enough to send it racing to 60 mph in a rapid 3.2 seconds. That's remarkable, especially when you consider it tips the scales at 4,079 lbs.

The all-electric roadster will be joined by its more conventional stablemates, the MG4 Electric XPower and the MG Marvel R Electric. The former produces a mighty 429 hp thanks to a dual motor setup, making it a rapid little hatchback.

Mini

BMW's boutique Mini brand will publicly reveal the new Mini Cooper and Countryman, both of which were unveiled this week.

The three-door Cooper Hardtop will be launched as an electric-only hatchback, with an ICE variant following with the five-door body style. Even the entry-level Cooper E has decent power figures, with 181 hp and 214 lb-ft. Upgrading to the SE increases outputs to 215 hp and 243 lb-ft.

If you're looking for Mini characteristics but need space for the entire family, then the new Countryman may be for you. Available with combustion and electric drivetrains, the new Countryman is larger than before, making for increased interior space.

The all-electric Countryman SE ALL4 puts out 308 hp and 364 lb-ft, allowing it to sprint to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds.

Opel

Stellantis-owned Opel will introduce the stunning Experimental concept car to the world at this year's IAA Mobility show.

The battery-powered crossover coupe is said to preview the future of the brand's electric design language. The interior features innovative touches, such as a steering wheel that folds away when not needed. The German automaker will also present two production-ready models, the Corsa Electric and Astra Sports Tourer Electric.

Both these vehicles show the brand's commitment to electrification; the Russelheim-based brand plans to become fully electric by 2028.

Porsche

Porsche will attend the Munich Motor Show, but the Zuffenhausen-based brand has yet to confirm which models it will bring to the event.

We're unsure what to expect, as the Macan EV will be unveiled at the LA Auto Show in mid-November. This doesn't leave us with much, but perhaps the sports car maker will reveal the fourth-generation Boxster, which will arrive as an electric rival to the MG Cyberster.

The automaker is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, so we expect the birthday celebrations to continue at the IAA Mobility Show. Perhaps showgoers will get a glimpse of the extraordinary Mission X Concept. Expect the new Cayenne and the Taycan to be on display as well.

Renault

The French automaker will reveal two new cars at the IAA Mobility Show. The first of the two models will be the Scenic E-Tech Electric, a battery-powered family car that brings the iconic Scenic nameplate into the electric era.

Unlike its predecessors, sold as traditional compact MPVs, the new Scenic E-Tech Electric appears to take on a crossover body style to appeal to more customers. Aside from this, the Boulogne-Billancourt-based brand also has plans to reveal the new Grand Kangoo, presumably a stretched-out version of the Kangoo commercial/passenger van.

Neither of these models is destined for our shores, but the Renault Group will introduce the premium Alpine sub-brand to America in 2027.

Smart

Smart is celebrating its 25th anniversary at the 2023 IAA Mobility Show. There's no better way to celebrate this milestone than by showcasing its latest vehicle, the new Smart #3, in Europe for the first time. The all-electric coupe crossover is a first for the brand and will be offered in Europe next year. Smart will also have the #1 on display.

The top-spec model produces 264 horsepower, but we don't expect the story to end there. As with the Smart #1, expect a Brabus-fettled version to arrive in the coming months. Aside from the electric vehicles, the automaker will also present a new collectible coffee table book, Always Unconventional, which details the brand's 25-year history.

Tesla

Several publications have reported that Tesla will host the public debut of the facelifted Model 3 at the Munich Motor Show.

Unveiled this week, the popular EV has been heavily revised and boasts new exterior styling, a redesigned interior, and a longer range. It will undoubtedly cause a stir at the IAA Mobility event and probably steal the spotlight from several concepts and new vehicles.

The new bodywork has resulted in improved aerodynamics. The compact sedan is longer, narrower, and longer than before and adopts a Roadster-inspired front end that gives it a more modern and upmarket appearance. We expect the Model Y to receive similar updates in the coming months.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen will use the Munich Motor Show to reveal the new ID.7 GTX, a high-performance version of the ID.7 electric sedan. Teased earlier this year, we previously speculated that the sporty EV will arrive with more than 350 horsepower.

It should be a fun and engaging car to drive, thanks to all-wheel drive and special software that manages the dynamics. Aside from this, the new Passat Variant will also be on display. Now in its ninth generation, the Passat will only be sold in wagon guise and, sadly, won't be heading to America. A new GTI may be in the works too...

The German automaker recently teased a secret new model that will be revealed soon, so we expect that to make an appearance at the IAA Mobility show as well.
